When businesses receive a complaint in the mail or got sued it’s normal behavior to panic because it is unknown as to what’s coming next. The first thing that everyone needs to know is when you receive a complaint in the mail, it will usually have the word summons written on the front of it as well as a copy of what was filed against you. In Ohio, you have 28 days from the date that you receive the summons to file an answer or otherwise respond to a complaint. So, you do have some time to take action, but if you exceed the 28-day period, the other party can file what is called a motion for default and get a judgment against you without you ever being able to tell your side of the story. This is why it is very important that as soon as you get that information, you calculate 28 days to file something or locate counsel so they can do something on your behalf.
